School Nurses aim to help each student feel safe, be healthy, and ready to learn.

We do this in several different ways.

  • First, We review students’ immunization records to ensure students have the required school entry vaccinations. This is important because group immunity protects your family members and the community. This also protects students who are medically unable to receive immunizations and who rely on the rest of our community to have immunity and keep them safe.

Vaccine Requirement's per NJ State: please visit : Vaccines - NJ.gov

When should I keep my child home from school, and for how long ?

The health and safety of all students is paramount at iLearn Charter School. The health office is a place to tend to the health and first aid needs of our younger population. When students feel well, they are ready for learning and can work to the best of their ability in the classroom. When you feel good, you learn better!

It is requested that you keep your child home if they show evidence of any of the following:

Flushed face or other signs of fever, such as complaints of headache

Runny nose, congestion, persistent cough, sneezing or other signs

of a cold

Sore throat, earache, or swollen glands

Vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or failure to eat a normal breakfast

Unexplained skin rashes

Sores on the skin, especially if moist, oozing, or encrusted

Unusual drowsiness or listlessness

Covid- like symptoms

Redness of the eyes with discharge

In order to return to school, our district protocol is that your child must be FREE from vomiting, diarrhea, or fever (without fever-reducing medication for 24 hours). If your child has vomited or had diarrhea, they must remain home until they are vomit/diarrhea- free for 24 hours.

Students with inflamed or pink eye(s) will be excluded. You must follow up with your physician for evaluation. If medication is prescribed, they must remain out of school until they have been on medication for at least 24 hours or they have a physician's note stating they are no longer contagious.

Parents are encouraged to contact the health office regarding any medical concerns they may have regarding their child’s health or if your child is taking any new medications.

Asthma Action Plan

Diabetes Medical Management Plan | ADA

https://diabetes.org/advocacy/safe-at-school-state-laws/diabetes-medical-management-plan

Seizure Action Plans | Epilepsy Foundation

How do I make a Seizure Action Plan?

  1. Use these forms to help create your seizure plan.
  2. Print out the "Seizure Action Plan" and follow along as you work through each section. If you are missing information or don’t know what to do, write it down on your "To Do List" and "Questions For My Health Care Team." Take these forms with you to your next office visit and ask for help.
  3. If you are a parent of a child with epilepsy, you can use the "Seizure Action Plan" specific to schools.
  4. To create an electronic plan, download a seizure diary app to track and manage your seizures. You can also find printable seizure calendars and diaries.
  5. Review your completed plan with your doctor or nurse. Make sure you have the information correct, especially the information on types of seizures and emergencies, doses of medicines, and how to respond to seizures and possible emergencies.
  6. After everyone has signed off on the plan, make copies!
    • Keep one with you at all times – in your purse, pocket or wallet, or backpack.
    • Put one in a central place in your home.
    • Give one to people who are with you most frequently (if you feel comfortable with this).
    • If you are a parent of a child with seizures, give one to the school nurse so appropriate people will know what to do if your child has a seizure. Make sure that your child knows you are doing this and is part of the process.
    • If you or your child goes to camp or other programs where she may spend a lot of time, give a copy to the camp nurse, counselor, or person in charge. Again, make sure your child knows you are doing this and is part of the process.
  7. Review the plan with your health care team and family on a regular basis – at least once a year or if seizures or your treatment changes.

Parents Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ilearn Schools have Automated External Defibrillators and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation trained staff?

ILearn schools has at least one AED installed at its main entrance, usually near the School Safety Officer’s desk, and staff trained in AED/CPR. Large school buildings have additional units installed throughout the building. A list of the location of each AED unit is located at the building’s main entrance. Schools must have AED/CPR trained staff present during all school hours of operation. Schools must also ensure the presence of at least one AED at school-sponsored or school-approved curricular or extra-curricular activities/events on or off-site except for field trips. High school coaches are required to take portable AEDs to all games and practices.

I submitted a Medication Administration Form or a medically prescribed treatment form for my child last year. Do I need to submit a new one this year?

Yes.
You should submit a new Medication Administration Form or Medically Prescribed Treatment form every
school year. While these are accepted on a rolling basis, we recommend submitting them by May 31. That way your child will have no break in access to their medication.

Prescriptions on Medication Administration Forms and Medically Prescribed Treatment forms expire at the end of each school year.

Your school nurse needs a new, updated Medication Administration Form every year to continue to give your child medicine at school or skilled nursing treatments.

Bring your child to the health care provider to fill out a new medically prescribed treatment form.

You must bring any other medical equipment, prescription and over-the-counter medicine that your child may need.
Please pick up your child’s unused medicine at the end of year.

How do I obtain extra doses of my child's emergency medication  so I can provide the medication(s) to the school nurse , as well as to have the emergency medication in my home , and with my child (if MD permits self carry)??

If your child requires emergency medication YOU MUST CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY TOapprove additional doses to have at home, school, and with your child (if MD permits self administer).         ***If you are having trouble contacting the insurance company, SPEAK DIRECTLY TO YOUR CHILD'S PRESCRIBING DOCTOR AND YOUR PHARMACIST .

Can the medicine I bring to my child’s school be already opened or used?

No.

For safety reasons, we only accept new, unopened medicine in its original box or bottle.

How should the medicine be labeled?

Prescription medicine must have original pharmacy labels. The labels must include:

your child’s name

the pharmacy name and phone number

your child’s health care provider’s name

the date

number of refills

name of medicine

dosage

when to take the medicine

how the medication is administered

-Over-the-counter medicine must be in the original bottle or box.

Where is medicine kept at school?

For safety reasons, medicine and medical equipment are generally stored in the school health office.

**Independent / Self Administer Students may carry their rescue medicines with them. Per Doctors written order.

All prescribed controlled substances are stored in the school health office in a double locked box.                                                   ***Students are NOT allowed to carry or self medicate any over the counter and/ or prescribed medications .

Emergency Medications with proof of Doctors orders stating "Permission to Self Administer" that has been reviewed by the nurse, is then allowed to carry the Emergency Medication listed on the Doctors Order.

Can I change the time that my child receives medicine at school?

Only your child’s health care provider can make this request. Ask your child’s health care provider to send the school an updated prescription or Medication Administration Form.

What happens if my child has a medical emergency?

All school nurses and select school staff and are trained how to best respond to a wide range of emergency situations.

In case of a medical emergency, it is especially important for students to have a Medication Administration Form on file at school.

A Medication Administration Form enables your child to receive his prescribed medicine at school, as soon as possible.

Depending on the illness, trained staff will respond accordingly.

Students experiencing a serious allergic reaction will be treated at school with an epinephrine auto-injector even if they do not have a Medication Administration Form on file.
